Marist scored three tries to two on its way to winning the premier championship final for the Lion Red Cup 23-18 over Hikurangi. Marist had to recover from being down 10-15 at halftime. Marist tryscorers were J Parangatai, L Ottley and J Levi. Levin kicked two penalty goals and landed a conversion. For Hikurangi G Whippy and T Don scored tries. Don kicked two penalties and a conversion. In the premier qualifying round Hikurangi had beaten Marist 15-13. In the premier plate final Awanui beat Western Sharks 18-13. In the premier reserve final Waipu downed Awanui 18-5.

Massey won its first premier title since 1993 when it beat Takapuna 39-29 in the championship final. Massey scored five tries to four and was ahead 17-10 at halftime. Takapuna, which has won eight premier titles since 1994, did well up front, but made crucial mistakes which Massey used to its advantage. In the plate final Marist beat Silverdale 22-17 while in the bowl final Glenfield pipped East Coast Bays 28-27. Others finals: Senior first - Massey 37 Silverdale 13. Pukekohe turned on blistering final 15 minutes to score a point a minute and snatch the premier championship title from defending champion Waiuku 31-22. Waiuku led 12-9 at halftime and then went out to 22-9. Then Pukekohe changed gear and Waiuku was on the receiving end and the points came. Papakura kept its premier spot for next season when it downed Weymouth 21-10. In earlier promotion-relegation rounds Bombay beat Karaka 20-18 and Papakura downed Patumahoe 28-7.

Hikurangi is the East Coast premier champion. However, top qualifier and unbeaten, Hikurangi had to overcame a spiritied challenge from second qualifier Uawa to win the top division championship final 8-6. Before Hikurangi was able to celebrate winning the Rangiora Keenan Memorial Shield in style, it had to come back from being 3-6 down with 10 minutes to play. Hikurangi's shining star was the veteran Horace Lewis who was driven over the Uawa line by a combination of his fellow forwards and backs to score the match winning try. Lewis was elated at the result, his first time in a premier championship winning side. The previous matches between the two sides during the season had resulted in a close win to Hikurangi and a 8-8 draw.
