WAIRARAPA-BUSH: Gladstone seniors and senior thirds won their championships. The seniors downed playing through champion Masterton Red Star 24-13, three tries to one, after being behind 12-13 at halftime. The senior thirds beat Pioneer 21-12. The colts final went to Ekatahuna which beat Pioneer 16-5. In the senior plate final Pioneer beat East Coast 22-18. NORTH CANTERBURY: Glenmark was always in command of the final against Oxford and won 37-5, five tries to one. Locals were rapt when around 5000 turned up. Division two: Glenmark 42, Southbrook 15. Division three: Rangiora 21, Ohoka 6. WELLINGTON: Marist-St Pat's 21, Poneke 16. However, it was absolutely positively stupid to send the finalists out with some of their best players missing for the biggest club match of the season. Hardham Cup: Old Boys-University 37, Johnsonville 22. WEST COAST-BULLER: Ngakawau-Karamea became the first champion of the new combined Senior Shield competition when it downed White Star Old Boys 18-9, two tries to nil. Craddock Trophy: Reefton 21, Westport 7. Foote Shield under 17: White Star Old Boys 49, Westport 0. THAMES VALLEY: Paeroa West upset the form charts with its 15-13 championship win against Thames after being down 3-13 at halftime. Senior B: Coromandel 17, Huaraki North 12. Senior C: Te Aroha College Old Boys 23, Thames 10. Under 21: Te Aroha 15, Hauraki North 15. KING COUNTRY: Waitete scored two tries to none to deservedly down Otorohanga in the senior final. Otorohanga led 9-3 at halftime. Division two relegation: Waitomo 13, College Old Boys Marist 3; Tihoi 38, Coast 12. NORTH HARBOUR: A dominant second half carried North Shore to victory 23-12 over Takapuna in the final. Takapuna had won the title in the previous seven years. Premier plate: Helensville 37, Kumeu 10. Bowl: Massey 24, Mahurangi 20. Senior first: East Coast Bays. Under 21s: Takapuna. Women: Massey. AUCKLAND: Ponsonby scored three tries to one to take out the Gallaher Shield 31-13 against defending champion Otahuhu. Ponsonby led 28-6 at halftime. Jubilee Trophy: University 25, Grammar-Carlton 17. Waitakere City and Papatoetoe were promoted to the premier division. Women's final: Marist 13, College Rifles 6. It was Marist's third successive championship victory. COUNTIES-MANUKAU: Ardmore Marist downed Papakura 13-5 in a tense final in which each side scored one try. Papakura led 5-3 at halftime. Premier relegation: Bombay 21, Waiuku 19. Division one: Manurewa. Division two: Puni. Division three: Drury. Under 21s: Waiuku. Under 19s: Waiuku. Women: Manurewa. WAIKATO: Hamilton Old Boys snatched victory away from Hautapu with a late penalty which took the score to 14-13. Group B: University 35, Te Rapa 12. Group C: Putaruru. Group D: Leamington. Group E: Kereone. Senior B: Hamilton Marist. Under 21s: Te Awamutu Sports. Under 19s: Fraser-Tech. Women: Frankton. BAY OF PLENTY: Waikite took the final honours 13-9 over Te Puke Sports. Waikite led 6-0 at the break. Division one: Te Puna 35, Mt Maunganui 32. Division two: Paroa. Division three: Rangiuru. Colts: Opotiki Sports. EAST COAST: Tokararangi beat Ruatoria City 24-3 to take out the championship and keep its unbeaten record for the season under the leadership of player-coach Morgan Waitoa. Tokararangi led 14-3 at halftime. POVERTY BAY: Old Boys Marist was too strong all over the paddock for Horouta and came away with a 51-14 success in the championship final. OBM scored six tries to two. Senior division one: Tapuae 25, OBM 18. Bottom four final: High School Old Boys. WANGANUI: Ratana kicked the goals that mattered and held out defending champion Marist 16-13 in the final. Marist scored two tries to one. Ratana finished the season with 18 straight wins, a mighty effort. HAWKE'S BAY: Napier Old Boys Marist upset Havelock 22-21 in the championship final. Havelock North had easily the better of its rival in earlier matches. MANAWATU: High School Old Boys controlled the final against Queen Elizabeth College Old Boys and the 21-9 scoreline was a fair reflection. HSOB scored three tries to none. HOROWHENUA-KAPITI: Levin Wanderers held off a determined Shannon effort to win 16-11, one try apiece. Wanderers had looked the likely champion a long way out in the round. Senior reserve: Waikanae Black 38, Shannon 14. NELSON BAYS: Marist proved too much for Waimea Old Boys as the 35-8 scoreline indicated. Marist scored five converted tries to collect its first championship for 21 years. It led 21-3 at halftime. CHRISTCHURCH: Fullback Andrew Mehrtens kicked six penalties to guide High School Old Boys to a 23-20 championship success against Christchurch. The scores were locked at 17-all, then 20-all before Mehrtens landed his sixth goal. Christchurch scored two tries to one. Women's final: University 32, Christchurch 14. SOUTH CANTERBURY: Temuka's solid defence was the key to its 30-10 championship success against Harlequins. Temuka led 10-5 at halftime. NORTH OTAGO: Maheno had to fight hard to take the championship 21-15 from Kurow. Senior B: Valley 22, Excelsior 7. OTAGO COUNTRY: Maniatoto scored three second half tries to one to down Clutha 26-10 in the championship final. It was 3-3 at halftime. Division two: Toko 5, Tapanui 0. DUNEDIN: University A won its 45th senior championship when it easily accounted for Pirates 34-6. Four converted tries saw University A cruise home. Playoff for third: Kaikorai 25, Harbour 6. Plate final: Southern 18, Dunedin 13. Salver final: Green Island 30, Eastern Sharks 0. MARLBOROUGH: Moutere had a top finals day. The seniors beat Harlequins 28-22 in an epic final, its senior reserve grade beat Kaikoura 18-5 and the women put the icing on the championship cake with a 13-10 success against Waitohi. INVERCARGILL: Marist got up to beat Eastern Hawks 15-11 in the Southland final. Marist's victory was its first in the Galbraith Shield final for 22 years. Eastern Hawks' feat to make the final in its first year was a boost for those who proposed its formation. Division two: Ohai-Nightcaps 34, Te Anau 18. Western Banner Shield: Riverton 31, Ohai-Nightcaps 21. TARANAKI: Tukapa became the champion for the first time since the late 1960s! But it had go into extra time to get the better of Eltham-Kaponga 40-32 after it had been 25-all at fulltime. Tukapa scored six tries to five before a crowd of 6000. NORTHLAND: There were plenty of thrills before Hikurangi clinched the championship trophy with a 22-17 victory over Hora Hora after being ahead 16-7 at halftime. Hikurangi's reserve side won its final 31-5 against Far North 90 Milers. Plate final: Far North 20, Kamo 7. |
